What is the Remanufacturing Industry, and how do Premier Components fit in?

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

A Remanufacturer is someone who purchases, remanufactures (fixes) and sells used automotive parts outside of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

The remanufacturing industry is certainly not a new industry, and has only grown in popularity over recent years due to product quality and availability, helping remand products become a more competitive substitute over new auto parts. A rebuilt part can be anywhere from 40% to 75% cheaper than a brand-new part and usually carries similar, if not the same, warranty.

Often, remand or rebuilt automotive parts are virtually indistinguishable from new parts, and as such, these parts are required to be labelled as “rebuild” / “remanufactured” so that they are not mistaken as brand new. Remanufacturing automotive parts involves completely disassembling, cleaning, examining wear and/or breakages and replacing the non-functioning components with new or rebuilt components. After all of this is done, the parts will then be reassembled and tested for compliance.

The remanufacturing industry has been active for more than 80 years and first started during World War II when the need to reuse automotive parts became increasingly important due to the sparseness of raw materials. As the industry has grown, core brokers such as Premier Components have been the front line of supplying remanufactures will the core that they require!

Premier Components’ business model (in basic terms), is to purchase large volumes of used automotive core (car parts), and after vigorous quality checks and quality grading, to supply these units to the remanufacturing industry. Premier Components UK Ltd has been running for over 25 years, so our expertise and knowledge in this industry is second to none. As such, remanufactures will come to us knowing that we will always have a large and varied range of stocked material at a competitive price, and in the grade that they require.

Contrary to what some may think, used automotive cores can be extremely difficult to source, and often come with a higher price tag when purchased individually from a scrap yard or similar. Premier’s extensive network in the industry allows us to be able to get hold of the most popular units, and as we always look to purchase in bulk, allows us to obtain the best possible prices.

As well as providing a cheaper alternative to new parts, the remanufacturing industry also has huge environmental benefits such as:

  • Energy conservation by keeping parts out of the resmelting process for longer, saving millions of barrels of oil and other forms of energy.
  • Raw material conservation, saving millions of tons of natural resources such as iron, aluminium, copper etc.
  • Landfill space conservation, stopping millions of tons of iron, aluminium and copper being dumped.
  • Air pollution reduction, by keeping parts out of the resmelting process, air pollution from this process is reduced.

Here at Premier Components, we love our industry and are proud of what we do. We are always keeping an active eye on the market and adapting our business to always stay one step ahead of the game.
